MAYDAY FESTIVAL OF RESISTANCE 2024

Our April grant has been awarded to this year's Mayday Festival of Resistance. The festival is organized by Mayday, a community center and movement resource project led by an active volunteer board and two staff members composed of community organizers, cultural workers, and artists.

This year's festival will be held on Saturday, May 4th, from 1-7pm in Maria Hernandez Park in Brooklyn.

Mayday Festival of Resistance is day of music, art, and joyful resistance, where neighbors come together to build solidarity, mutual aid and people power. The festival is a display of our collective strength and empowers long-term residents of Bushwick and Brooklyn with creativity, music, mutual aid, and resources. It is a powerful way of bringing the neighborhood together to strengthen local organizing efforts, and build the global movement for justice thereby filling a void in the social justice landscape of our city.

The festival will coincide with the 2-year anniversary of both our music program with Bushwick/Ridgewood immigrant youth and our visual arts program for emerging movement artists led by artists-in-residence Sebastian Angel and Crystal Clarity. Mayday Fest will be our music program’s first official showcase as a BK-based cumbia band and our visual program's first public narration of their cantastoria, which illustrates the history of May Day.

Most importantly, the community organizations who host in our space year-round, including Bushwick Ayuda Mutua, Brooklyn Eviction Defense, and Frack Outta BK, will be providing know your rights resources, interactive workshops, and teach-outs on tenant, immigrant, environmental, and workers justice for the more than 1,000 neighbors who attend. We will also invite frontline worker leaders to speak on their recent wins, ongoing labor campaigns, and invite attendees to join/support their efforts for the long-term.
